2019 MVTHS Sports Hall of Fame Announced

MT. VERNON — The 2019 MVTHS Sports Hall of Fame Induction will be held on Sat January 12, 2019 in Changnon Gymnasium on the campus of Mt. Vernon High School. Here are the Individual Inductees

Carlos Burns- Class of 1993- in football Carlos was named All South Seven Conference and All-South Defensive Team. As a wrestler he was a South Seven Champion and also named All-Conference. Carlos played football and wrestled at Millikin University where he was also named to All Conference teams in both sports.

Brian Deaton – Class of 2006 – a rare 3 Sport Athlete at MVTHS, football, basketball and baseball. Lead the 2005 Hall of Fame football team to a school record 11 wins and to the IHSA State Quarterfinals, named South 7 MVP and Southern Illinois Player of the Year as the Rams Quarterback his senior season.  Contact number 618-237-0606

Carol Ray – class of 1986 – outstanding  cross country, basketball, track athlete for the Lady Rams. Her 86 Basketball team set a school record 26 wins and advanced to the IHSA Supersectional, with her as point quard. She is a member of the 1986 Hall of Fame Track and Field Team. Also a 3 sport athlete in college, she ran cross, played basketball and softball at RLC. Carol finished her college at SIU – E  where she ran cross country.  Contact number is 618-660-8668

Ben Doggan – Class of 1982 – a football and basketball athlete at MVTHS – in football he holds the record for Most Yards as a Receiver with 1286 yards and is second all time with 66 Career Receptions. Ben continued his football career at Millikin University.

Tyrone Woodgett – Class of 1975- outstanding football player for the Rams , holds the record for Most Career Touchdowns with 30, rushed for 1191 yards as a senior and named South 7 Conference MVP. He also was a track Athlete at MVTHS. Tyrone played football for Illinois State University. Contact number is 303-525-4670.

Melbourne Evans – Class of 1910- a four sport athlete for MVTHS, led his basketball teams to the IHSA ELITE 8 twice, first as a junior in the 1908-09 season which was the first time ever a MVTHS basketball team qualified. His senior year in 1909-10 the team again qualified and placed 4th. Melbourne was named First Team All-State his junior season, the first MVTHS basketball player to achieve that honor. 1969-70 Rams Basketball team coached by Bob Arnold. This team was South Seven Champions as well as IHSA Regional and Sectional Champs. Final record was 21-6

1991 Rams Cross Country team, coached by Sonny Ellis. This squad is the only cross team that won a IHSA Sectional Championship. They also were South Seven Champs and Regional Champions. Coach Ellis contact number is 618-521-6984.
