Plenty of Talent in Southern Illinois High School Basketball, But No Clear Front Runners Through Half the Season

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — The second half of the high school basketball season is here. While many teams have shown they are talented, there is a large field of good teams in southern Illinois on both the boys and girls side, and there are no clear frontrunners.

Benton girls basketball coach Andy Sloan says teams across downstate have to come ready to play each night because of the talent and balance among southern Illinois basketball teams.

His Rangerettes are among a crowded and talented girls basketball field in southern Illinois, which also includes Nashville, Hamilton County, S.V.W., Woodlawn, and Pinckneyville. On the boys side, some of the teams making noise include Mt. Vernon, Woodlawn, Sesser-Valier, Nashville, Pinckneyville, and Fairfield.
